How Did I Get Into Real Estate?

March 5, 2020

It all started with my first home purchase, and was sort of by accident. As most people do, I spent much of my time just before and after my first purchase watching HGTV, and one show that captivated me was about creating rentals to maximize rent. Every time I looked at my new home, all I could see was its potential. It was a fixer-upper, although in livable condition, so I spent the two years I lived there painting, tearing out carpet, refinishing floors, and learning all about what it meant to be a new homeowner. It got the wheels turning in my head, and I decided from the beginning it would be a rental some day. My plan was to buy a new house and rent the first one in five years.

Fast-forward a year and a half, and my dad approached me with a bombshell. He and my step-mom were planning to move from Maryland to West Virginia in preparation of his retirement. Our family home is a 19th century Victorian, a one of a kind, and my brother and I wanted to keep it in the family for generations, so my dad asked if I wanted to buy it from them. Of course I said yes, then took a crash course in renting. In 2012, I wouldn’t be able to sell my new home, so renting was the only option. I learned all I could about being a landlord in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and my first tenants, a local police officer and his family, moved in on October 1, 2012.
